General Class Information

This is a Vinyasa flow class. My class tends to be pretty challenging for beginners, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t welcome. Listen to your body and do what you can. Learn from what the other students are doing, but you don’t need to look like anyone else – it’s your personal practice! Yoga isn’t about getting a pose to be in a certain shape; it’s about the state of your mind while attempting a pose. Take child’s pose if you need to rest at any point. Over time, you will find yourself gaining the strength, coordination, and flexibility to do some of the challenging sequences.

OMing and Chanting
I do not include chanting in my classes, although I do like to end my classes with a “namaste.”

Music
I play low-key non-traditional music, ranging from Ben Sollee to Van Morrison.

What is Vinyasa Yoga?
“Vinyasa” means “breath synchronized movement.” A class named “Vinyasa” or “Vinyasa flow” will have poses performed in sync with the breathing (inhale as you go up, exhale as you go down, etc). There is a fluidity between a wide array of yoga postures. Expect a lot of movement instead of just holding one pose for a few breaths and then switching. The constant movement can be overwhelming for a new yogi, but with practice and patience it will become second nature.

The word “vinyasa” can be used as a verb; “take a vinyasa between these poses.” This basically means to connect poses with a semi-sun-salutation. By the end of one class you will understand this concept very, very well!
